As the first light of dawn spills across the towering dunes of Sossusvlei, a Namib Sky hot air balloon rises gently into the morning sky. Carried silently by the wind, guests drift above one of the world’s oldest deserts as towering red dunes, rugged mountains and vast desert plains unfold beneath them. It is a breathtaking perspective of the Namib – peaceful, timeless and unlike anything else on earth.

Where the adventure begins
The experience concludes with the renowned Namib Sky Signature Desert Breakfast, served in elegant safari style at a secluded location in the desert. Combined with the serenity of the flight itself, it is easy to understand why a sunrise balloon safari is regarded as one of Namibia’s most extraordinary and memorable travel experiences.

A bird’s-eye view of the Namib
Founded in 1991 by Eric and Nancy Hesemans following an extraordinary journey across Central Africa, Namib Sky Balloon Safaris has remained a family business rooted in a deep love for the Namib Desert. Today, the second generation, Andreia and Denis, continue to build on the values established by Eric and Nancy, offering authentic hot air balloon safaris over the Namib with the same commitment to safety, professionalism and personal service.

The magic behind the flight
Along the way, the family helped shape tourism in the Namib, working alongside the pioneers of the NamibRand Nature Reserve and building a business founded on conservation, hospitality and a lifelong passion for the desert.
Yet what makes the experience even more meaningful is what happens beyond the flight.
What began as a small daycare in Denis and Andreia Hesemans’ home has grown into the Namib Sky Community School, today providing free education, nutritious meals, transport, school uniforms and learning materials to children in the Sossusvlei area. Through the Namib Sky Community Trust, the initiative has expanded to include nutrition programmes, family support and skills development, while a community sewing project creates sustainable income opportunities for local families and helps fund the school’s future.

Beyond the balloon safari – Namib Sky Community Trust
Every sunrise flight with Namib Sky offers an extraordinary perspective on one of Namibia’s most remarkable landscapes. Yet behind every unforgettable journey lies a deep commitment to conservation, education and community development, proof that responsible tourism can create lasting opportunities, strengthen communities and leave a place better than it was found.
