Amidst the stark, breathtaking landscapes of Sossusvlei, the Namib Sky Community School stands as a testament to the power of education, support, and resilience.
Nestled within the arid expanse of Sossusvlei, Namibia, Namib Sky Community School serves as a beacon of hope and resilience for the previously disadvantaged in our community. Alongside free education, uniforms, and resources, students benefit from a well-rounded nutrition plan vital for their growth. The school weathered the impact of COVID-19, with enrollment dropping to just nine learners in 2021 before experiencing a revival akin to the first bloom of spring, growing to 34 learners by the end of last year and further expanding to 41 this year. This narrative of resilience and resurgence reflects the unbreakable spirit of our collective donor family and the power of unity in overcoming challenges.
Our commitment to holistic growth extends beyond the classroom, recognizing the importance of a nurturing environment at home. Parents are supported through self-improvement programs covering parenting, health, hygiene, and skills training like sewing and computer literacy. This approach fosters a supportive atmosphere for children to thrive and families to strengthen. At the heart of our community-building efforts is the sewing project, whose primary mandate is economic empowerment. Participants acquire essential sewing skills, access materials, and use our workshop’s sewing machines at no cost. Sales from their creations help individuals earn money and contribute significantly to the financial stability of our school, embodying the belief that beautiful creations come together one stitch at a time.
Motivated by a commitment to empowering the community and ensuring long-term sustainability, our passionate team also recognizes the pressing need to establish a sustainable food source. In an area with limited rainfall, the school’s greenhouse yields seasonal vegetables and herbs, reducing dependence on expensive supply chains and paving the way for community self-sustainability. Additionally, a flourishing chicken coop supplies eggs to the school’s kitchen, enhancing food security.
“We are proud of our beautiful work, greatly enhanced by the generous backing of our primary donor, Namib Sky Balloon Safaris, and our extensive network of supporters, including tour operators who buy our exquisite products,” says Mariette Mukamana, Project Developer at Namib Sky Community Trust.
