The Etendeka Experience consists of two distinct wilderness products within a 400-square-kilometre exclusive use community conservation concession in the foothills of the Grootberg Massif in north-west Namibia: Etendeka Mountain Camp and the Etendeka Hiking Trails.
Located within the dramatic landscapes of Damaraland, the concession is characterised by ancient Etendeka basalt lava flows, flat-topped mountains, dry riverbeds and vast open plains. The area is managed through a Join Venture partnership between Big Sky Lodges and the Omatendeka and Anabeb Conservancies, ensuring that tourism directly contributes to conservation and local communities.

What is the difference between Etendeka Mountain Camp and the Etendeka Hiking Trails?
Although both experiences take place within the same concession, they are designed for different types of travellers.
Etendeka Mountain Camp offers a comfortable wilderness stay in ten Meru-style safari tents with private bathrooms. Guests enjoy guided nature walks, scenic drives, wholesome meals, warm hospitality, a swimming pool, bar and restaurant, making it ideal for travellers wanting to experience Damaraland at a relaxed pace.
The Etendeka Hiking Trails are designed for guests seeking a more immersive wilderness adventure. The three day / two-night guided slack-pack hikes include overnight stays at River Camp and Hill Camp, where guests sleep on raised sleeping platforms under the stars. The focus is on hiking, wilderness immersion and connecting deeply with the landscape. The Etendeka Hiking Experience is best finished off with a third night at Etendeka Mountain Camp.
Where is Etendeka and how do guests reach the concession?
Etendeka is located in north-west Namibia in the foothills of the Grootberg Massif, within a private conservation concession in Damaraland.
Guests meet at Palmwag Lodge, where secure parking is available, before being transferred into the concession by Etendeka vehicle. The scenic transfer itself forms part of the experience and introduces guests to the geology, wildlife and landscapes of the area. Guests doing the Etendeka Hiking Trails are dropped off close to Palmwag Lodge to start their hike while guests staying at Etendeka Mountain Camp enjoy a 90-minute scenic drive through the concession to the camp. Private vehicles are not permitted within the concession.

The Etendeka Hiking Trail is a two-day / three-night guided slack-pack hiking experience with an optional but highly recommended third night at Etendeka Mountain Camp
Guests hike through remote sections of the concession while their luggage is transferred separately between camps. Overnight stays take place at River Camp and Hill Camp, where guests sleep on raised sleeping platforms under the stars while enjoying simple comfort in an extraordinary wilderness setting. Meals are prepared over the fire and enjoyed together with the guide and fellow hikers.
The Etendeka Hiking Trails include guided walking, accommodation at the overnight trail camps, meals, local drinks, luggage transfer between camps, use of a day pack, water bottle and walking stick, and the scenic transfer or nature drive back to the pick-up point at Palmwag Lodge.
The trail is led by experienced guides who introduce guests to the remarkable geology, desert-adapted wildlife, plant life and conservation story of the concession. Many guests consider the expertise and passion of the guides to be one of the highlights of the experience.
Who is the Etendeka Hiking Trail suitable for?
The hiking trail is suitable for active travellers who enjoy walking and spending time outdoors. Guests should be active and comfortable walking for several hours over uneven, rocky terrain. The trail is not technical, but the environment is remote and temperatures can be warm, so a reasonable level of fitness is important.
Children must be at least 12 years old to participate in the hiking trail. Groups are intentionally kept small, 8 guests max, to ensure a personalised experience and a minimal impact on the environment.
Guests should bring comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, a hat, light clothing, a warm layer for evenings, personal toiletries and any required medication. Main luggage is transferred between camps, while guests walk with only a day pack.

At the beginning of 2025, Etendeka also introduced a Conservation, Education and Social Welfare Levy. This levy is calculated as a percentage of each guest’s rate and is collected and managed by Etendeka Lodge Company and Big Sky Lodges. Together with our community joint-venture partners, we identify areas where support is most needed and allocate these funds in a meaningful and practical way.
Education has been identified as one of the most urgent areas requiring assistance, and funds are being directed towards supporting schools within the surrounding conservancies. Through these initiatives, Etendeka aims to ensure that tourism creates real benefits for the communities who live in and help protect this extraordinary wilderness area.
