At sunrise, in the quiet heart of the Namib, watch the colours of dawn rise with your balloon as it gently lifts from the desert floor.

Carried by the wind, the landscape unfolds below you—towering dunes, ancient mountains, and endless desert horizons where light and shadow paint shifting patterns across the sand. This is the Namib Desert and Sossusvlei’s dunes from above: remote, wild, and deeply humbling.

Touch down in a secluded valley where our Namib Sky Signature Desert Breakfast awaits – served in elegant safari style, surrounded by raw desert beauty.

This is an experience of a lifetime, one that lingers long after the adventure ends.

Namib Sky Balloon Safaris

Your journey of a lifetime will also help Namib Sky’s Namib Sky Community School programme, which enables local kids to reach new heights themselves.

Namib Sky Community School

The sky is the limit

Namib Sky Community School is a free Early Childhood Development Centre and lower primary school in Sossusvlei, Namibia. Education is a basic human right, but out in the desert, isolated from towns and cities without public transport, that human right is hard to fulfill.

With tourism on the rise, the local community is rapidly growing and the need for education and other services are on the rise. Namib Sky Community School is focused on providing free, quality education and a well-balanced nutrition plan to previously disadvantaged children of preschool and lower primary. Visit website

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do Namib Sky balloon flights take place and how do guests get there?

Namib Sky Balloon Safaris operates from two flight regions in southern Namibia. The original launch site is located near Sossusvlei and Sesriem in the Namib Desert, while a second launch site serves guests staying within and around the NamibRand Nature Reserve, including the Wolwedans Collection and neighbouring lodges.

Guests are collected before sunrise and transferred to the launch site, where they can watch the balloons being inflated against the backdrop of the desert dawn before embarking on their flight.

What does a Namib Sky balloon flight involve and how long does it last?

The Namib Sky experience begins before sunrise when guests are transferred to the launch site. Upon arrival, guests can watch the balloon being prepared and inflated before take-off.

The flight itself lasts approximately one hour, depending on weather and wind conditions, and provides aerial views of the Namib Desert, including dune systems, mountain ranges and vast desert plains. The route varies daily according to wind conditions, making every flight unique.

After landing, guests enjoy the traditional Namib Sky Signature Breakfast in the desert before returning to their lodge. On school days, guests may also visit the Namib Sky Community School and learn more about the work of the Namib Sky Community Trust.

Is there an age restriction for Namib Sky balloon flights?
Children are generally required to be at least 6 years old or approximately 120 cm tall to participate in a balloon flight, allowing them to safely see over the basket edge.

Younger children can accompany the experience from the ground by travelling with the Namib Sky crew in a 4×4 vehicle and rejoining their parents after the flight for the Namib Sky Signature Desert Breakfast. Complimentary babysitting for younger children can be arranged with advance notice.

Is a Namib Sky balloon flight safe?
Established in 1991, Namib Sky Balloon Safaris has safely carried more than 100,000 passengers and maintained a 100% safety record for over 30 years. Flights are conducted by licensed commercial balloon pilots and only operate when weather and wind conditions meet strict safety requirements.

Flight decisions are based on prevailing weather conditions, and flights may be delayed or cancelled if conditions are unsuitable. Passenger safety is the company’s highest operational priority.

How does a Namib Sky balloon flight compare to a ground-based Sossusvlei visit?
A Namib Sky balloon flight and a ground visit to Sossusvlei are complementary rather than interchangeable. The balloon provides an aerial perspective across the full desert landscape that ground access cannot replicate. Most guests who fly with Namib Sky also visit Sossusvlei and Deadvlei separately.
Where does a Namib Sky flight fit in a Namibia itinerary?

A Namib Sky balloon flight is typically added to a two- or three-night stay in the Sossusvlei region and is suitable for guests staying both near Sesriem and within the NamibRand Nature Reserve.

Many visitors combine a balloon flight with a stay at the Wolwedans Collection in the NamibRand Nature Reserve or at lodges near Sossusvlei before continuing their journey to Swakopmund, Damaraland, Etosha National Park or southern Namibia. The flight provides a unique aerial perspective of the Namib Desert and adds a memorable dimension to any Namibia itinerary.

What community projects does Namib Sky support?

Namib Sky supports community development through the Namib Sky Community Trust. The Trust operates the Namib Sky Community School, which provides free early childhood development and primary education for children living in the Sossusvlei region.

In addition to the school, the Trust supports educational resources, teacher development, school transport and other community initiatives that contribute to the long-term wellbeing of local families. Guests visiting the school gain insight into the positive impact that responsible tourism can have on local communities.
